How do i use vlc media player to save a dvd as an mp4 file?

I tried this a week ago, but all I got was someone telling me it was impossible even though I’ve done it before, I was just too stupid to remember what options I picked.
I need to know the specific options because what I am trying now doesn’t work. I just want the main movie (title 1) not the entire DVD.
I have used vlc media player to save media files as another extension but I can’t seem to get this one to work. it needs to be in a standard mp4 format, 320X240, 512kb/s, and it should be able to play but it doesn’t even play on my computer.
If it can’t be done does anyone know of a FREE converter I can use instead?
